1. Strategy

Defining the what, the specific objectives, is critical to a campaign and communications strategy. Making it measurable, and making it realistic i.e. it corresponds to the available resources (time, money, personnel). A strategy also needs to be flexible, able to adapt to external circumstances.

2. Communications

Communications follows the lead of policy objectives. So how to tell the story that are those policy objectives. Why this change and now? Crafting the messages that tells that story, identifying the target audiences, adapting the messages to them and then delivering at the right time are music, if got right.

3. Media Relations

The media is still a persuasive force in pursuing desired change. How to identify which media are most relevant to your target audience. What messages resonates with the media’s editorial line, how to cultivate relationships. Drafting the text that tells a compelling story. Getting the basics right.

4. Advocacy

Decision-makers are not automatons, nor are they purely rational beasts moved by science and evidence. Tailored communication, a compelling case, understanding “where they are coming from,” and being able to demonstrate the issue resonates with their constituency, e.g. “show me the money [votes]“. Working with decision-makers such that they feel that making the decisions that realise specific objectives is the right course of action.
