OD Communications is Mike Walker, and I am …
I work with organisations, large and small, to realise desired change. This means working with them to develop strategies, on campaign and communications planning, advocacy, media relations, and engaging social media. Realising change means having obtainable objectives clearly articulated with a comprehensive strategy. Of course few strategies survive contact with reality, and that is where the real campaigning starts.
I have been doing this for over 15 years for different organisations. With The Pew Charitable Trusts I delivered transformative communications on a range of ocean conservation related campaigns: ending EU overfishing; large scale fully-protected marine reserves; illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing; shark conservation; and with the Pew Marine Fellows programme.
For the World Organisation of the Scout Movement, the largest global education organisation, I represented the organisation, and its members, to the European Institutions. At the same time I worked closely with member organisations to build their communications and advocacy capacity, especially in south-eastern and central Europe.
And before that I was instrumental in developing a small healthcare NGO into a nationally regarded provider of critical services to a highly vulnerable population. In doing this I learnt a great deal about the need to clearly identify need, formulate a strategy around meeting that, and then delivering it. It was a steep and rewarding learning curve.
Throughout all these experiences I have focussed on securing attainable change. I am skilled at identifying that opportunity for change, developing the strategy and then building the capacity to achieve it.
